Marnitz Steyn (b. 1984) is a South African fine artist known for emotionally charged realism enriched with some impressionistic, expressionistic, and occasional abstract elements. Born deaf, he developed a heightened sensitivity to visual detail, translating sound into light, movement, and colour in his work. After studying at the Trans Oranje School for the Deaf and the Jacquey Theron Art School, he held his first solo exhibition in 2001 at the age of 17 at Aluvi House. His work has since been exhibited widely, including at the 2018 New York Art Expo, where he gained international recognition and also won the Deaf Artist International competition at Wits University in the same year. Working from his studio in George, he explores multiple mediums and uses painting as a way to express the world he perceives through vision rather than sound.
