My art is autobiographical and thus reflects directly on personal experiences and where I am currently in my life”, the artist states. However, she adds universal meaning by using subjects with strong metaphoric value. She frequently utilises maps since travelling is part of her reference world as an expat. Van der Vyver is fascinated by the way her subject matter takes on parabolic meaning when positioned on old maps. “My work explores the intricate relationship between my South African routes (old maps) and new metaphors on my journey”, she says. She draws inspiration from her home/home country as well as new worlds to explore.
“Art is a wonderful escape”, van der Vyver continues. “It makes the unbearable, bearable or even beautiful at times. Embroidery is found in so many cultures. By using embroidery in my work, I strive for it to resonate with a more global awareness. I also use other subjects that deal with and often celebrate the value of culture.” Very early in my life I learned the embroidery tradition from my mother and grandmother. Using it in my work celebrates the ongoing tradition. I am fascinated with the process of artmaking, when old traditions(embroidery) find new meaning as they get juxtaposed with painted subjects. Although my work frequently refers to my own life, I believe that the allegorical value of the subject matter is of such a kind that it will convey a deeper awareness of the human journey as one evolves and ages.”
