My name is Marinda du Toit. I live in the Western Cape in South Africa.
I build characters from found objects, like wood, plastic, metal, wire, paper, textile. These characters resemble the people I watch, their posture, walk and energy. The objects and material guide me to build figurines or collages intuitively. The history of the material and assemblage thereof, establish a renewed narrative to the objects and the artwork.
I had especially great fun with making work for the Peculiar exhibition. I had freedom (not always so), to let my imagination run, being able to use wonderful and weird little objects I have collected, and also let them guide me to create fantastical peculiar little characters. Thank you.
