South African landscape has always been the subject of my painting. The Northern Cape, where I have lived since 1976, has captured my imagination with its harsh beauty. Having grown up in East London and studied in Port Elizabeth, I have a very deep rooted connection with the sea and it is no wonder that seascapes balance the scale of my experience and interpretation. I combine the spontaneity and freshness of painting outdoors with the discipline and finish of working in the studio. Colour is a significant aspect of my work as well as a lively surface rippling with vigorous brushwork and movement. Certain works are moody and evoke an emotional response from the viewer while others are luminous with light and atmosphere. The choice of subject is entirely personal based on firsthand experience of the natural splendour of our country.
